To compliment the article section, we have collected an expanding number of films from which we can learn strategies of communal resistance and creative approaches to the “What do we do” question that always remains in the air when discussing the future of Academia. The following films were made by the Medvedkin Group in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s climate of worker’s strikes in France. They attempted to involve workers into the filmmaking process so they could tell their story, seeing film as another tool in the struggle against capitalist exploitation. Although they ultimately document a double failure (both in the worker’s involvement in the film and the strikes themselves), they provide a historical example from which to think collective action against unfair working conditions.




In light of the tuition hikes that are converting education into a “debt” enterprise, we need to pay attention to the central role that debt plays in today’s socio-political economies. Here is a lecture (paradoxically sponsored by google) from David Graeber, author of “Debt: The First 5000 years”:

Greece is only the most recent example of a society burdened by debt, with public policy highjacked by austerity measures in a vicious cycle in which the rich get more rich and the rest are left to suffer. In this context public education, health and culture are under constant threat of disappearance at the hands of dubious privatization. The following documentary uses the Greek example to show how debt can be seen as a calculated strategy for neoliberal reform.
